“If you want to escape the scorching hot heat, come to San Francisco. We really have the best weather to escape that heat,” said Alex Bastian, president and CEO of the Hotel Council of San Francisco this week in an interview with Audacy.
This summer is expected to be a hot one for much of the U.S., even though temperatures last month were below average, according to Climate.gov. It said that “the temperature outlook map favors well above average temperatures across almost the entire Lower 48, with the exception of parts of the southern and central Great Plains,” during June.
Dangerous storms and record-breaking heat are also forecasted over the coming months and years.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac is also predicting a “scorcher” of a summer across the country. However, as Bastian pointed out, its map shows that an area encompassing the Pacific Northwest and Northern California looks like it will have an easier time than most of the country.
California Climate Adaption Strategy noted that the city and surrounding Bay Area in general has a “Mediterranean-type climate, characterized by mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.”
Bastian said that July and August, which could be even hotter than June, are also ideal times to visit the area. He stressed in his interview wit KCBS Radio that tourism is an essential industry for the area.
“Tell your friends and family to come join us. And the hotel rates are actually pretty amazing for the summer months,” said Bastian.
So, once tourists are in the breezy Bay Area, what else can they expect?
“I love seeing people and the magic that they feel when they’re on the cable car or when they just hit the Golden Gate Bridge or when they eat at our restaurants,” Bastian explained. “That is something that gives us all pride and it brings money to our city.”
