'Baron of the Bullpen', Pirates pitcher Elroy Face dies at 97

Known as the Baron of the Bullpen, Pirates legend Elroy Face died Thursday.

The majority of Faces' 16 seasons in the majors was as a Pittsburgh Pirates.

In 1959 he went 18-1, still the best winning percentage of any pitcher with more than 13 decisions.

He pitched in 846 games. His 193 saves from 1962 through 1982 was the record for many years.

His 96 wins in relief is still stands as the most.

Face ranked 3rd in pitching appearances and second in saves when he retired.

Only Hoyt Wilhelm and Cy Young were better.

He is the Pirates all-time leader in career games, 802 and saves 188.

He was a carpenter in the off season and very active with Pirate Alumni. He was inducted into the Pirates' Hall of Fame in 2023.

The man known for his fork ball was 97.
