Nick Gonzales returns from ankle fracture, other Pirates roster moves

The Pirates have reinstated infielder Nick Gonzales from the 60-day injured list.

To make room for Gonzales on the 40-man and 26-man rosters, infielder/outfielder Nick Solak has been sent to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The Pirates have also recalled right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas from Indianapolis.

"It's tough to go down in the first game, but happy to be back, happy to be back with the team and just find a way to help them as best I can," Gonzales said. "It's tough being on the sideline to help out, so it's good to be here."

Gonzales went on the IL after the second game of the season, after hitting a home run.

"It's great and everything Nick means to us, having his bat back in the lineup, spark plug for us and not to take anything away from what Adam Frazier did for us, as well, over this course, while Nick was hurt," said Pirates manager Don Kelly. "He was awesome. Great at-bats, was consistent, played tremendous defense — just a real asset to have."

He suffered a “non-displaced left ankle fracture” in spring training but it was thought to be just soreness until the home run, because an X-ray didn’t pick up the break.

The Pirates took Gonzales 7th overall in the 2020 draft and he has a .256 average over 477 at bats so far in the MLB.

The Bucs begin a homestand against the Houston Astros Tuesday night at PNC Park.
