Onley: No one would want to face Pirates if they make postseason

Another baseball insider is telling the league to watch out for the Pirates.

After Audacy baseball insider Jeff Passan said the Pirates are currently the second-best team in the National League Central, ESPN’s Buster Olney recently said on the Audacy original podcast, “Baseball Isn’t Boring” that the Pirates are an “interesting” team.

“They’re kinda hanging around the edge,” Olney told host Rob Bradford. “You tell me a team that would want to go into a short series in October against Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and (Mitch) Keller.”

Onley says that makes them an interesting team at the trade deadline.

If the Pirates make the playoffs, it’s the pitching staff that would concern other teams, not the offense.

But, if the Pirates can make some moves on offense and improve, just “a little bit” and can somehow make it to the postseason, “they would be the team no one would want to face.”

The Pirates are currently tied for third in the Central with the Reds, both eight games back. Pittsburgh hosts Cincinnati over the next three days.

At three games under .500, the Bucs are currently a game out of the final Wild Card spot.

Multiple experts have now said the Pirates can be dangerous in the playoffs, but they need another bat or two.
