The Pirates are adding depth to their pitching staff, signing veteran right-handed pitcher Jose Urquidy to a one-year deal.
Multiple sources, including the Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey reports it’s a 1.5 million deal, pending a physical.
The 30-year-old Urquidy has a lifetime ERA of 4.00 with a record of 27-16 over 81 games (70 starts).
He spent his first five seasons in the MLB with the Astros winning a World Series in 2022 in Houston
He went 13-8 that year with an ERA of 3.94, 134 strikeouts and 38 walks.
But in 2023, Urquidy suffered an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
He missed the entire 2024 season and signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2025.
He made only two appearances for the Tigers last year with an ERA of 7.71.
The Pirates are hoping Urquidy can bounce back from his surgery, now two years in the rearview mirror.
