Steelers President Art Rooney II met with select members of the media on Monday and it sounds like the organization will stay the course for the foreseeable future.
Rooney said that he doesn’t expect “wholesale” changes but there will be some moves.
He also remains confident that Head Coach Mike Tomlin is the man to lead the Steelers into the future. There isn’t much surprise with this, since Tomlin just signed a three-year extension last year.
When you look at how many games Mike (Tomlin) has won in this league, you don’t win that many without being a good head coach. We still feel good about him being a leader.”
“When you have a good coach, you just keep trying to build with him,” added Rooney.
Rooney also said he wants Russell Wilson or Justin Fields if he had his choice for the quarterback next year.
“My preference would be to sign one of those quarterbacks (Russell Wilson or Justin Fields). Obviously, we will be looking in the draft as well either this year or next. That (quarterback position) has to be the priority.”
While he isn’t saying it’s impossible, he doesn’t see the Steelers being able to re-sign both Wilson and Fields.
When it comes to expanding the coaching staff, Rooney doesn’t believe that is the answer to making the team better in the future.
He also disagreed that the Steelers have the smallest coaching staff in the NFL saying they have 27 coaches and it depends on how that coach is defined by the league.
