According to the CHP, officers responded to a report of a Tesla Model 3 being driven the wrong way on westbound state Route 91, ultimately slamming head-on into a Mitsubishi Lancer being driven by a 22-year-old man.

Both vehicles caught fire, witnesses told the CHP. Efforts by civilians to put out the flames were not successful.

CHP officials said both drivers -- who were the sole occupants of the vehicles -- died in the crash.

An investigation was continuing. It was unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

A SigAlert was issued at 12:45 a.m. diverting all westbound traffic off at the Main Street collector road while authorities worked to clear the scene.

Anyone with additional information on the crash was asked to contact the CHP Accident Investigation Unit at 951-637-8000.
