(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — High tech could solve the home building supply crunch.
3-D Printing could be used to build houses. The user uploads a blueprint into a 3-D printer, which then creates the design using a laser pen and liquid material.
Tech expert Paul Hochman tells the WBBM Noon Business Hour that large 3-D printers could build a house out of concrete. He said it is a process that is both faster and cheaper.
"The whole process is dramatically accelerated and the cost is dramatically lower," Hochman said.
He notes 3-D printers are already being used to make bigger windmills for power generation.
"The base used to be concrete that had to be flown in with giant helicopters," Hochman said.
"You can make the base taller, therefore the windmill is taller, therefore more energy efficiency because it gets more wind," Hochman added.
