Being scared of heights can’t be called childish anymore, as an eight-year-old became the youngest person ever to climb the rock wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
The thrill-seeking child has it written into his middle name as Sam Adventure Baker and had his achievement shared online by his father.
In a Facebook post, his father, Joe Baker, shared that they scaled the cliff from Tuesday to Saturday with a four-person team. The group worked together, with one person climbing ahead and setting ropes for others to follow and everyone sleeping on the rock face at night.
“I’m so proud of Sam. He completed the youngest rope ascent of El Cap! In a few years he might be back breaking more records,” Joe Baker wrote.
Ann Baker spoke with CNN about her son’s achievements, of which she and her husband are extremely supportive.
“He seems really happy to be up there and spirits are high,” she said.
The climb of El Capitan is well known as the rock formation rises 3,000 feet above Yosemite Valley and is seen as a very challenging climb for those who are considered experienced in the climbing community.
The record prior to Sam Baker was Selah Schneiter, a 10-year-old who made the climb in 2019.
