A new report shows a lot more trash is piling up around LA.
It found illegal trash and hazardous item dumping has increased 450 percent from 2016 to 2020.
City Controller Ron Galperin tells KNX 1070 News this is a public health and public safety issue not to mention a big environmental problem.
"It is an equity issue because we know a lot of this dumping happens in neighborhoods that are mostly low income and communities of color and it is a quality of life issue for everybody in the city. We have to really dedicate more resources and find ways to prevent this and find ways to really increase the fines on those who are dumping illegally," he says.
Galperin says more cameras should be installed - in areas that are popular for illegal dumping.
He also says the number of illegal dumping cleanup crews should be increased .. and there should be a push to highlight "free and low-cost trash disposal services."
