New legislation benefiting nearly 3 million public service employees will be signed into law by President Joe Biden as one of his final Presidential acts before ceding the White House back to Donald Trump.

The Social Security Fairness Act rolls back the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.

Eliminating those two regulations should increase monthly benefits for those affected by an average of about $360 to around $1,190 by December of this year.

The change “corrects a 40-year-old wrong,” according to Edward Kelly of the International Association of Fire Fighters. He says the increase will finally allow firefighters to afford retirement, according to ABC13/The Associated Press.

The legislation was backed by a number of Republicans, including Susan Collins, in addition to Democrats.

Meanwhile, it was opposed by other Republicans like Rand Paul, John Thune and Thom Tillis, who pointed to worries over the sustainability of the increased benefits.
