Many people attending this year’s San Diego Comic-Con were shocked when it was revealed many major studios, including Netflix, Marvel, Universal, and Sony would not be holding any panels.

Kerry Dixon, the editor-in-chief of the Unofficial Comic-Con Blog, told L.A.'s Afternoon News that it’s normal for studios not to be there when they don’t have that much content coming out.

“HBO skipped a year before when they've got stuff really far off in the distance,” she said. “For the other studios, I think it’s a little bit of the same.  Some of them like Universal Studios just don't have that much that I feel like they would probably bring and for others. “

She added that the ongoing writers’ strike and the possible SAG-AFTRA strike also played a role.

“I think it's probably the main reason why Marvel is not coming this year,” she said. “A couple weeks ago, several of the actors who were in Marvel projects had been posting like, ‘Hey, we're gonna be at Comic-Con,’ which was a pretty good indication that Marvel was planning to come, and then in light of the writers' strike and productions being shut down release date started shifting. And then shortly after that was when Marvel Studio said, ‘Actually, we're not gonna be there this year.’”

Dixon noted there’s still plenty for attendees to look forward to at this year’s Comic-Con.

“.Lionsgate will be there on the TV side. They're bringing things like ‘Ghost’ and ‘The Continental,’ which is the John Wick prequel…,” she said. “So there will still be panels and then there will be plenty of things to do outside of the Convention Center as well. Even if some of these studios aren't necessarily bringing panels, they may, may still be doing the fun things to do out in downtown San Diego for folks.”

San Diego Comic-Con will be held at the San Diego Convention Center from July 20 through the 23rd.
