“It is overwhelming how much support we’re getting from all over,” said Lady Flyers Coach Todd Stelnick.

Just days after a tragic crash that claimed the life of a team member’s parent, they won a championship. On Friday, the team of youth girl’s hockey players were honored at the Iceoplex in Simi Valley.

According to a GoFundMe page, a snowplow lost control and “struck a sprinter van head-on” while players on the team and their family members were traveling for a game in Colorado. This crash killed the father of one player and landed the mother of another in the hospital.

During the Friday ceremony at the Iceoplex, the Ventura Vikings hosted a ceremony recognizing the girls’ resilience on and off the ice, featuring raffles to benefit affected families, tributes from local teams and appearances from professional players. For over 20 years, the Santa Clarita Flyers club has been training youth hockey players age 18 and under.

Now, the Lady Flyers are preparing for their next tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
