Two pit bulls ran into the kitchen and attacked 1-year-old Ruby Cervantes as she was crying, the toddler’s grandmother told deputies.

“He had her by the leg and I had to get his teeth off of her,” she said to KTLA.
“He bit my hand and my hand’s pretty severely cut open.”

The dogs then reportedly turned on the child’s mother, Jamie Morales, who stabbed one of the dogs to death, saying she had no other choice.

“It was either him or my daughter, and I chose my daughter,” she said.

"The dog was latched on her left leg," the toddler's grandmother, Margaret Ann Morales, told KABC what she did after she walked into the kitchen. "That's when I had to actually get my hand into his jaws and open them up and that's when he released her."

Morales, her sister, and her mother were injured trying to stop the dogs. Cervantes, who was bitten on her face and body, was taken to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. She underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

The second dog, which authorities removed from the house, was euthanized, officials said.

Both dogs had been in the house for four months and never showed signs of aggression prior to the attack, the family told KTTV.
