EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Garcetti remains 'optimistic' that he'll be confirmed as ambassador to India

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – In his final KNX News interview, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he remains optimistic regarding his Senate confirmation as ambassador to India.

“I have great bipartisan support,” he told In Depth’s Rob Archer and Charles Feldman. “The president has been very clear and I leave it really in his hands...”

He added that although the confirmation is up to the Senate to schedule that he’s positive it will come “in the next month or two.”

“(Biden) has been very clear, ‘the most populous country in the world needs an ambassador’,” Garcetti explained. “‘It’s been plenty long and this is the guy (referring to Garcetti), my guy, stand by 100 percent.’”

On July 9, 2021, President Biden nominated Garcetti to be the ambassador to India.

In March, the Senate’s vote was delayed after Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) objected due “numerous credible allegations from multiple whistleblowers alleging that Mr. Garcetti, while mayor of Los Angeles, had knowledge of sexual harassment and assaults allegedly committed against multiple city employees and their associates by his close advisor…”

Garcetti denied this during the confirmation hearing.

Grassley launched an investigation into the matter and in a report released in May, he concluded that Garcetti “more likely than not” was aware of the behavior of his then-deputy chief of staff, Rick Jacobs.

"While I strongly disagree with the opinion reached in this report, I am pleased that Senator Grassley has lifted his hold, and hope that my nomination by the president can be considered by the Senate soon,” Garcetti said in a statement.

It was later reported by Politico that Garcetti’s parents hired McGuireWoods Consulting to lobby for his ambassadorship nomination.
