INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (KNX) — San Diego-native tennis player Taylor Fritz defeated Russian Andrey Rublev on Saturday to earn a place in Sunday’s final of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Fritz, the 20th-ranked male professional tennis player worldwide, beat the seventh-ranked Rublev 7 to 5, 6 to 4.

Sunday will mark Fritz’s seventh ATP tour final and first at Indian Wells. In it, he’ll face off against the winner of Saturday’s other men’s semifinal between Spanish players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, ranked fourth and 19th respectively.

Fritz is the first U.S. national to reach the Indian Wells singles final since 2012.

Fritz was born in San Diego and grew up in Rancho Santa Fe. He attended Torrey Pines High School, where he won the California Interscholastic Federation singles tennis title in the San Diego section as a freshman.
