Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of crypto giant FTX, has been arrested following American authorities filing criminal charges against him. The arrest was made in the Bahamas, the country’s attorney general shared on Monday.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder didn’t share the exact details of the charges brought against Bankman-Fried, but they did share that he was under arrest.

“The Bahamas and the United States have a shared interest in holding accountable all individuals associated with FTX who may have betrayed the public trust and broken the law,” Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis said in a statement.

Pinder also shared that American authorities are expected to request Bankman-Fried’s extradition back to the U.S.

U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, also shared a statement on the arrest.

“Earlier this evening, Bahamian authorities arrested Samuel Bankman-Fried at the request of the U.S. government, based on a sealed indictment,” Williams said. “We expect to move to unseal the indictment in the morning and will have more to say at that time.”

The Bahamas are continuing a regulatory criminal investigation into the sudden and unexpected collapse of FTX, which was moved from Hong Kong to the Bahamas last year, according to the statement.
