LOS ANGELES (KNX) — For nearly two years the doors to Hollywood’s iconic Cinerama Dome have been shut, while the public awaited its fate. On Friday, new rumors seemed to indicate that a comeback is planned for 2022.

In April, Arclight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres announced the Dome would not reopen following it’s 2020 pandemic closure, along with several other theaters owned by Decurion.

In July, initial rumors of the return of both the Dome and ArcLight Hollywood began to swirl when a picture showing the unboarded doors of the ArcLight was shared on Twitter, according to Eater Los Angeles

Turns out, the rumors were right — at least in the case of the Cinerama Dome. On Friday The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the geodesic concrete dome theater plans to reopen next year, though it didn’t indicate when the reopen is set to happen.

“On Dec. 16, a public notice of an application to sell alcoholic beverages was posted outside the theater, with the business name listed as Cinerama,” the magazine wrote.

“Studio distribution sources confirmed the theater, built in 1963 by the Decurion Corporation, is preparing to resume showings, after having been dark since March 2020.”

Designed in 1963, the Cinerama Dome was originally supposed to be a prototype to showcase the new Cinerama process, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy.

However, only a few others were built, making the one standing in Hollywood “a very rare example of a Cinerama theatre, retaining the curved screen that was required for the three-projector system.”

The theatre was also the first geodesic dome in the world, and contains more than 300 pentagonal and hexagonal panels that each weigh up to 3,200 pounds, the Conservancy said.
