LOS ANGELES (KNX) – While Tuesday is Tax Day, some Californians can wait until October to file.

In March, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced an extension on the state tax filing and payment due dates for those impacted by the winter storms in December and January.

According to IRS spokesperson Raphael Tulino, those who live in the 55 counties that are in a “presidential declared disaster area” can wait until October 16 to pay.

“The three that don't qualify are way up in the northeast corner of the state,” Tulino told L.A. Morning News. “What the tax relief is, is the postponement of deadlines which allow for penalty and interest relief until the date of which it was extended - it was May and then now it's extended all the way out to October 16th- to file and pay your tax.”

If you live in the impacted areas, have to pay any taxes and,  receive a letter from the IRS stating that there are penalties and interests being added, Tulino says you should tell the government agency you live in the disaster area.

“The IRS identifies the address of record on the return, noting the county has that disaster declaration and therefore that extension and that gives you the October 16th deadline extension to file,” he said.

The following counties can wait until October 16 to file their taxes:

Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Inyo, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba.
