L.A. Councilman Kevin de León says he will seek ‘professional sensitivity training’ in letter to City Council president

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – In a letter addressed to the Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, Councilmember Kevin de León announced he plans to seek professional sensitivity training in the midst of calls for him to resign following his involvement in a leaked recording in which racist remarks were made.

In the letter, de León asked to be excused from Council meetings “so that I can refocus my energy on meeting directly with those I represent to begin the process.”

“I also plan to use this time to take up professional sensitivity training in order for me to reflect more deeply on the pain that I have caused to the many people with whom I’ve worked alongside for decades in the fight for fairness and justice for all communities,” he continued.

De León, who said during an interview with on Noticiero Univision Wednesday that he will not resign, wrote that while the decision to resign would be easier, “I know that an option like that is only a solution that benefits me - not the people who elected me to represent them.”

He also said he understood and accepted that he would be removed from his role as Chair of the Homelessness & Poverty Committee as well as other committee assignments

“I am aware that my colleagues have introduced motions to begin the process of censuring me,” he added. “I accept that decision and will willingly be a part of that process whatever the committee decides.”

But Krekorian told KNX News’ Chris Sedens, it’s not enough.

“It is entirely unacceptable for Mr. de León to think that apologies will make up for the damage that’s been caused to the city right now,” he said.

“As I read through the letter, as I watched parts of his interviews in the media the other day, it just made me actually angrier because this is not about him. This is about where the city is right now and what he needs to do in order to help the city recover and that is he needs to resign.
