DOWNTOWN, LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies responded to a crowd of several hundred protesters that formed Tuesday evening downtown and grew larger as the night progressed.
The department said at least one officer had been injured and requested an ambulance but did not specify the extent of their injuries.
LAPD Chief Michael Moore said people in the crowd had thrown bottles and rocks at patrolmen near Pershing Square.
Shortly after 9 p.m., the LAPD issued a city-wide tactical alert, putting all its officers on high alert.
Moore also cautioned the public to stay away from the area as the crowd marched, warning of possible traffic delays near Broadway and Fifth streets.
A protester told CBS2 they gathered to peacefully protest in favor of protecting abortion rights but said a few participants became rowdy and blocked intersections.
Video posted to Twitter showed protesters clashing with officers wearing Department of Homeland Security uniforms, some carrying weapons. An officer yells for a belligerent protester to move back and appears to push him, causing one of several scuffles throughout the night.
Protesters marched for and against abortion rights in Northern California and several other cities across the country Tuesday night, including in Washington outside the Supreme Court.
