LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles Community College District students can save some coins in 2022 if they stick to public transportation.
Starting this week, LACCD students can ride buses and trains operated by L.A. Metro for free through Dec. 31, 2022, according to LACCD officials.
The free rides are an extension of the existing GoPass program that allows K-12 students in Los Angeles County ride L.A. Metro for free. The pilot program, which was approved by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors, launched Nov. 1.
Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins announced the GoPass program for LACCD students Tuesday at the LA Metro Red Line station at Vermont/Santa Monica.
“A recent study completed by the Hope Center found that students spend a fifth of their total living expenses on transportation, and this is especially true for community college students who almost exclusively commute to campus,” Wiggins said Tuesday, according to MyNewsLA.
A quarter of LACCD students reported using public transit regularly to go to school before the pandemic, the site reported.
A majority of the pilot program for LAUSD and LACCD students—about $41.5 million—will be paid by the federal American Rescue Plan.
