The Los Angeles Unified School District instrument repair crew – who were featured in the recent short film “The Last Repair Shop” – received their Academy Award Monday.
KNX News’ Karen Adams spoke to Steve Bagmanyan, the supervisor at the L.A. musical repair warehouse, about their Oscar and the short film.
“We got a big recognition, not only district-wide, not only in L.A., in our community, but also across the country, and we get a lot of donations now, the instrument donations from all over the place,” he said.

The co-directors of the documentary and LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho presented the crew with their award.
“Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, the co-directors of ‘The Last Repair Shop,’ brought notice, brought life, brought attention, brought recognition, elevated the dignity, the humanity, the professionalism of individuals who for far too long worked in the shadows,” Carvalho said.

The documentary’s Oscar win has raised more than $500,000 to expand LAUSD’s music repair shop.
