A new lawsuit alleges that the grocery company Ralphs denied jobs to hundreds of people based on their criminal history.

This is the first challenge to come under California’s Fair Chance Act. This is the state law that restricts employers from asking about people’s criminal history before making a hiring decision.

The state Civil Rights Department said the grocery store did not limit the use of conviction history when looking at job applications.

The Civil Rights Department is seeking monetary damages for workers who were denied jobs or who lost jobs because Ralphs didn’t follow the 2018 law.

Ralphs, which is owned by Kroger, has not commented on the lawsuit.
