Man pleads guilty to buying and selling stolen laptops

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KNX) – A Folsom man pled guilty to buying and selling laptops stolen from multiple universities including Stanford and Berkeley, as well as Tesla.

From October 2015 to June 2020, Philip James, 35, bought around 1,000 stolen Apple MacBooks from several people to sell them off to buyers outside the state, according to federal prosecutors.

In one instance, James’ bought 100 stolen computers from Cory Beck, an employee at Tesla’s IT department.

James bought at least 800 stolen MacBooks from Stanford University and 90 stolen MacBooks from University of California, Berkeley.

James will pay restitution as part of his plea agreement, including $2,283,155 to Stanford University, $256,485 to Tesla and $209,057 to University of California, Berkeley.

James will be sentenced on July 25.

Beck and the other people pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme, officials said.
