Paul Chacon Workman, 40, of Riverside is charged with attempted murder and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations for the alleged attack last week that left the victim, identified only as a Riverside man in his 40s, in critical condition.
The patient's status has changed little since he was wounded on Oct. 24 and hospitalized in downtown Riverside, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Workman pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Wednesday before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Melissa Hale, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for Nov. 7 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
The defendant is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail.
According to police spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback, just before 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, Workman and the victim were involved in an unspecified dispute outside a vacant building in the 6100 block of Van Buren Boulevard, roughly a half-mile south of Riverside Municipal Airport.
During the confrontation, the defendant allegedly pulled a handgun and opened fire, inflicting several gunshot wounds to the victim, then fleeing the location, Railsback said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, and Robbery-Homicide Unit detectives initiated their investigation, which soon led to the alleged shooter's identity, though no further details were disclosed by police, including a possible motive.
Railsback said Workman was located the following afternoon on East 40th Street in San Bernardino, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Court records indicated he has several prior felony convictions, but they weren't listed.
