A spokesman for the senator shared a statement on what happened, saying he tripped while leaving the lunch.
“He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule,” the aide said in a statement obtained by CBS News.
McConnell was later seen by reporters at the Capitol sporting a brace on his wrist and a bandage on his face. He told reporters he was feeling “good” when asked.
Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) led the GOP press conference in McConnell’s place on Tuesday, saying he appeared to be okay when he was asked about it.
“He is fine. He is in his office,” Thune said of the 82-year-old.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) hosted the lunch meeting earlier on Tuesday and helped escort McConnell back to his office after the fall, The Hill reported. Barrasso also told a senator that McConnell’s injuries were sustained in a fall following the lunch.
Several aides and a medical team with a wheelchair were seen following McConnell and Barrasso into the senior senator’s office.
The senator has not commented further on the incident.
This isn’t the first time McConnell has had a medical incident. In 2023, he fell while leaving a private dinner and was hospitalized from the incident. He also suffered a concussion.
Later that year, he appeared to freeze two separate times while speaking with reporters, leading many to question the top Republican Senator’s health.
