The new express lanes on Interstate 405 from Costa Mesa to the Los Angeles County line officially opened on Friday.

The project, which kicked off in 2018, cost $2.126 billion, according to City News Service.

The lanes will go between state Route 73 and the San Gabriel River Freeway, according to KCAL News. Two express lanes and one regular lane were added in each direction.

Darryl Johnson, the CEO of the Orange County Transportation Authority, said the goal is to keep traffic moving.

“You can go from the very southern end of the project at the 405, 73, all the way to the L.A. County line at 65 miles an hour during the rush hour,” he said. “If we're able to do that, which is what we believe we can, then a traveler over that entire distance can save as much as 15 or 20 minutes compared to the preconstruction conditions.”

Drivers will need a transponder and will have to pay a fee if they have less than three people in the car. Fees will range from $2.70 to $9.95.

Peak hours on weekdays will be from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m
