Firefighters are getting a handle on the North Fire burning in the hillsides near Castaic and Valencia, just off Old Road.
Jonathan Metheny of LA County Fire tells KNX that crews have stopped its forward progress, and all mandatory evacuation orders for the area have been lifted.
But there were some tense moments, as the flames became very close to homes, near Rye Canyon Loop. This resident told CBS 2 that people were frantic, using water hoses to keep their homes from burning.
There are still some road closures in the area. Right now the North Fire has burned about 650 acres and is at 25% containment.
More than 100 firefighters were battling the flames.
No structures are threatened, but crews are stationed at the North County Correctional Facility as a precaution.
Large air tankers, at least seven, were helping out at the scene.
The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon on The Old Road.
