A man was killed in a crash on the northbound 405 Freeway near Sherman Way early Monday morning, prompting closures.

It happened around 4:30 a.m., according to City News Service. A SigAlert was issued just after 5 a.m. with officials saying traffic would be diverted off Sherman Way.

The man was reportedly driving north on the freeway when his vehicle hit the center divider and stopped facing the wrong way, leading authorities to believe preliminarily that he had been driving the wrong way, CHP told City News Service.

“After that vehicle spun out, it was struck by the red vehicle and then by the truck, the red vehicle probably turned the vehicle some more,” CHP Officer Casey Ramstead told KNX News.

One man told KNX News’ Jon Baird he was driving up the 405 Freeway and ended up in the middle of crash.

“I was in the far right lane,” he said. “There was a car next to me. I actually was slowing down because I like to gather my space. So I was slowing down to let that car get away in front of me. But then without a signal, he just slowly cut in front of me and it startled me. So I went into his lane to get away from him and boom, hit the car that was already involved in an accident. I had no idea that that's why he was doing that.”

The northbound lanes are closed at this time.
