Police have arrested a 42-year-old man they said was involved in a hit-and-run crash that killed an Apple Valley student Lawrence Andrews in front of his family.
L.A. county sheriff's deputies charged Chad Goodro with a fatal felony hit-and-run on Monday. He was booked at High Desert Detention Center but was released on a $50,000 bond on Tuesday.
The crash occurred Oct. 19 around 8:11 p.m. on Navajo Road, near the James Woody Community Center. Family members told KTLA Lawrence volunteered for his little brother’s Pee Wee team prior to the crash.
Lawrence, a student athlete, was crossing Apple Valley Street with his stepmother, Sarah Andrews, and her two children on Oct. 19. Police said she noticed a speeding car headed in their direction.
"We looked both ways, and the car was way down there," Sarah recalled to NBC4. "It had just turned by the stop sign. The car sped up as it got closer. I barely pulled my younger one out of the way, and I went back to reach for Lawrence, but he wasn’t there."
Andrews died at the scene.

Goodro reportedly drove significantly faster than allowed, more than 60 miles per hour when he hit the teenager, San Bernardino deputies said. Authorities did not disclose how they identified Goodro as the suspect.
Family and friends remembered Lawrence – a football player for Apple Valley High’s team – was remembered by family and friends as a “funny” kid who lit up any room he walked into.
“He brightened up the room every time he stepped in. He was a comedian, he liked to joke around every day,” Marvin Harrison, Andrews’ uncle, told KTLA.
A GoFundMe was established for Andrews’ family.
The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Deputy R. Grissom or Deputy J. Malocco at the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station at (760) 240-7400.
