LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department have offered a reward of up to $50,000 for tips leading to the apprehension of a hit-and-run driver responsible for killing a man who was crossing the street in South L.A. in February.
Jemmy Chavarria, 42, was struck while crossing the street at 84th and Hoover streets with his wife and two-year-old son. The collision happened at around 7:15 p.m. on Feb.26. Chavarria later died at a hospital from his injuries.
"As both northbound and southbound traffic stopped for the family to cross, a gray sedan driving at a high rate of speed traveling northbound on Hoover Street went into oncoming southbound lanes, and as it was going to strike the family of three, the father saved his two-year-old son by tossing him out of the path of the oncoming suspect vehicle," police said at the time.
The suspect drove off northbound on Hoover Street. Chavarria’s wife and son were taken to a hospital and were reported to be in stable condition, police said.
Anyone with information on the incident was urged to call the LAPD’s South Traffic Division at (323) 421-2500. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous may call the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at (877) 222-8477.
