NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- R. Kelly on Wednesday was sentenced in a Brooklyn federal court to 30 years in his federal sex trafficking case.

R. Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, told Judge Ann M. Donnelly that his sentence should "not based on inflamed emotions." She also pointed out the the Chicago-born performer "grew up in a highly chaotic home" where he was sexually abused, and that he was a product of his childhood. “Mr. Kelly rejects that’s he’s this monster," she said.

The former R&B star, 55, was found guilty by a jury last September of all nine counts against him. He was charged with racketeering and violating an anti-sex trafficking law known as the Mann Act. The six-week trial shed led on how he recruited women and underage females and males for sex, and used his celebrity status to influence his victims.

R. Kelly, who has been housed at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, since the verdict, used his "fame, money and popularity” to systematically “prey upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing earlier this month.
