The Redondo Beach City Council is voting Tuesday evening on where to locate its model tiny-home homeless shelter village.

According to the Daily Breeze, the shelter is currently located at a public works site near the South Bay Galleria. The 15-unit shelter, comprised of highly durable aluminum and composite materials, designed for people facing homelessness and natural disasters, can house up to 20 people and their pets at a time.

City Attorney Mike Webb told KNX said the council is considering whether to keep the shelter at its current location, move it to the Beach Cities Health District parking lot in the center of town or possibly split the shelter into separate locations in different parts of the city.

Webb said other cities were copying the model, which began housing a portion of the city’s 100 homeless persons in October 2020.

The shelters offer temporarily housing, bring court and other services to homeless individuals and re-teach them how to live in society.  Webb said the city has helped 18 people find permanent housing.

At issue, according to the Breeze, is whether or not the entire city should share the burden of housing the homeless. When originally approved, the shelter was only planned to be at its current location for six months. If approved for relocation, the shelter would be at Beach Cities Health District lot for another six months.

“It’s been working so far,” Webb said. “We’ll find out if it continues to work at the same location, if it gets moved or if we potentially have one in North Redondo, one in South Redondo and we can make an even bigger dent in the number of unhoused individuals in Redondo Beach.”
