A Foster City woman last month lost big in an online crypto scam that all started on a dating app.

The woman, in her early 40s, had been communicating romantically for a couple months with a man she met on the dating app "Hinge." The two established "some type of trust or relationship," Foster City Police Lt. Mark Lee told KCBS Radio.
There was enough trust to where the woman was duped into investing $826,00 online into a crypto currency account.
Lee said the woman eventually wanted to cash out the growing pot of money, but discovered she had no access to the account. The woman reported the scam to police on Feb. 28.
The name the suspect used was of Chinese descent, but it remains unclear who or where he was from.
"We have no idea if really in fact he is Chinese or it is a Chinese scam," Lee said. "We have no idea whose on the other end at this time without details."
This woman is not alone, as these scams have been being reported across the country, involving victims in their 20s, 30s and 40s.
"You have to be very, very cautious when a, it comes to developing a relationship and two, you're even thinking about or investing money at any amount," Lee said.
A complaint has also been filed with the Federal Trade Commission's internet crime complaint center. Lee admitted these are tough crimes to solve.
