Sacramento deputies arrest known 'gang member' for firing shots

SACRAMENTO (KNX) – Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Saturday they say is a gang member with a violent history.

Deputies responded to a seven-round ShotSpotter activation at the 4800 block of Willowbrook Drive just after 7:40 p.m.

The shots had been reportedly fired from a residence belonging to Mong Cha – a 43-year-old “known criminal street gang member with a lengthy violent criminal history”, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies on the scene saw Cha inside the house and he was arrested. Law enforcement officials discovered five expended 9mm shell casings near his driveway.

“Deputies and GSU detectives conducted a search of Cha’s residence which yielded a loaded, unserialized privately made firearm (PMF) and a “Roni” style pistol conversion kit,” the department said.

“The magazine was loaded with multiple rounds, which matched the type of casings located on the driveway.”

Cha was arrested for possession of a firearm by a felon, discharging a firearm in grossly negligent manner, felon in possession of ammunition and possession of unregistered firearm. He was booked at Sacramento County Main Jail with a $50,000 bail.

Anyone who may have witnessed or knows anything about the incident is asked contact the Sheriff’s Office at (916) 874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP
