A San Bernardino sheriff's deputy has died after being shot during a chase in the Yucca Valley area.

Deputies were attempting to pull over a man on a motorcycle without a license plate, but he fled.

While searching the cycle, the suspect fired and hit one of the deputies. He was air-lifted to a local hospital but later died as a result of his injuries.

During a press conference, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon announced that Sergeant Dominic Vaca was 43 years old.

"The gunshot wound he sustained earlier today was too severe for him to overcome. Our prayers are with him and his family as we all mourn this difficult time," the sheriff said.

Vaca was a 17-year veteran of the department and was a sergeant at the Morongo Basin Station.

The suspect was shot as well, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
