Standoff with armed robbery suspect forces lockdown at 2 Santa Ana elementary schools

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KNX) — An elementary school in Santa Ana was partially evacuated on Tuesday morning as police negotiated with a suspect implicated in a number of armed robberies on the campus’ driveway.

Police surrounded the male suspect, seated in his car parked outside Lowell Elementary School. The unnamed man is wanted in connection with several robberies that took place earlier on Tuesday. He was first spotted on a road near the school at around 8 a.m.

A brief pursuit ended in the west driveway of Lowell Elementary at 700 South Flower Street, according to Santa Ana police.

A SWAT team was on location and the buildings closest to the suspect were evacuated. The remaining occupied classrooms were placed on lockdown. A lockdown was also issued for nearby Pio Pico Elementary School.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the suspect was taken into custody. All students and staff are safe, according to Santa Ana School District officials, an no injuries were reported by law enforcement.

It was not immediately known if the man was armed at the time of the standoff.
