Analysts measured the cities using 43 "key indicators" which were divided into four categories: health care, food, fitness, and green space. The data set included the cost of a medical visit, fruits and vegetable consumption, and a city's "greeness." The metrics were combined to result in a weighted score for each city.

Seattle, San Diego, Portland and San Diego rounded out the top five. Other Bay Area cities on the list included Fremont (20), San Jose (21), Oakland (26) and Santa Rosa (42).

San Francisco’s overall total was buoyed by the number one score in the "food" and "green space" categories. The city specifically measured well in hiking trails per capita (1), healthy restaurants per capita (5) and share of physically active adults (12).
