LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The old West Los Angeles Courthouse could become affordable and mixed-use housing, after the county Board of Supervisors agreed today to publish a notice of intention to purchase the property from the Judicial Council.
The motion, brought by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, asks the county to find the money to purchase the property, which is described in the motion as ``one of the largest publicly-owned infill sites suitable for affordable housing in this densely-populated western area of the County.''
The property, which has been vacant since June 2013, already has a prospective developer chosen by the county, West LA Commons LLC, to turn it into housing.
The current terms of the project dictate that the developer then pay the county $32.2 million.
The motion states that the county has already paid the Judicial Council over $3.5 million ``to incentivize development of affordable housing for the site.''
Members of the public can provide comment about the project on Nov. 15, when the board will discuss the project again.
