Tesla recalls over 27,000 Cybertruck vehicles

Tesla is recalling more than 27,000 Cybertruck vehicles because of an issue with the rearview camera that causes a delay in the image being displayed, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for rear visibility.

"Under certain conditions, the vehicle system (including the rearview image) may not complete a shutdown process before the system is commanded to boot-up," the NHTSA said in a recall notice. "If the driver starts a backing event before the vehicle system completes its shut down and boot-up, the rearview image may not display within two seconds of placing the vehicle in reverse as required by [law]."

The issue could cause display screens to appear blank for up to 8 seconds after the vehicle is shifted to reverse.

"Delayed availability of the rearview camera display may affect the driver's rear view and increase the risk of a collision," the NHTSA said, noting that drivers should still continue "performing a shoulder check and using their mirrors," while reversing.

Tesla has already released a free software update to fix the problem, and owners are expected to be notified by mail in late November. No further action is necessary from owners of affected vehicles.

Tesla said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue. However, it has received 45 warranty claims and four field reports that may be related to the problem.

This is the fifth recall for the Cybertruck since it went on sale less than a year ago.
