The 53-year old was skating when the accident happened, according to TMZ.

Hawk shared the news with his fans in a lengthy Instagram post. The athlete noted that while he is determined to skate again, his road to recovery will be slightly longer due to the "severity" of the injury and his "age."

"But I’m up for the challenge," he added.

Hawk couldn't help but point out the irony of the accident happening on the eve of the trailer release for his upcoming HBO documentary, “Until The Wheels Fall Off,” which focuses on his life and lengthy career.

"I’ve said many times that I won’t stop skating until I am physically unable. A broken leg - with plenty of hardware - will probably be the biggest test of that creed," he wrote in the caption, adding that he is confident he'll be back but "maybe not at full capacity."

He added: "I resigned to that notion years ago as I approached “mid-life.""

Until The Wheels Fall Off" premieres on HBO Max on April 5.
