President-elect Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is calling on Republican lawmakers to pass the main points of his agenda in a single reconciliation bill. But what is a reconciliation bill?
To pass legislation via the reconciliation process, Republicans would only need a simple majority in both chambers of Congress, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. That means they would not require Democratic support.

The process is often used “to quickly advance high-priority fiscal legislation,” the Center shared.
Trump shared his motives on his social media site Truth Social on Sunday, giving a glimpse into how his second term in the White House might begin.
“Members of Congress are getting to work on one powerful Bill that will bring our Country back, and make it greater than ever before,” Trump wrote.
Trump continued, sharing several of his campaign points that he would like to address through the single large bill.
“We must Secure our Border, Unleash American Energy, and Renew the Trump Tax Cuts, which were the largest in History, but we will make it even better – NO TAX ON TIPS,” Trump went on to say.
To do this, Trump said that he would need Republicans in Congress to act swiftly.
“Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People,” Trump posted. “Get smart, tough, and send the Bill to my desk to sign as soon as possible.”
The post from Trump comes a day after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told House Republicans that Trump would be looking to get his agenda through in one large reconciliation bill.
It was at one point suggested that Congress may pass a reconciliation bill with added border security early in Trump’s second term while waiting to pass a second bill focused on tax policy.
On Sunday, Johnson also told Fox News that he was aiming to have the House vote on the reconciliation package the first week of April.
