A refurbished ride vehicle from the iconic Space Mountain ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom recently went for top dollar at auction, bringing in $43,500.
The news of the vehicle’s sale came from the California-based auction house Van Eaton Galleries, the host of the recent “Joel Magee Auction, Part 2” event.
The auction house shared that it had estimated the vehicle, which dates back to the roller coaster’s debut in 1975, would draw a winning bid of somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000.
“This vehicle preserves the original body and interior of a three-seat Space Mountain rocket on a custom-recreated chassis,” the auction house said.
The auction had nearly 1,500 items, and the Space Mountain vehicle brought in the highest amount of any of them. The runner-up was a refurbished Autopia Mark VII vehicle from Disneyland, which sold for $42,000.
The “Joel Magee Auction, Part 2” was a continuation of an earlier event the auction house held that also featured Disney-oriented goods from the South Florida collector.
Magee put his items up for action after deciding to liquidate his holdings. He has appeared on several TV shows as a known collector, including “Pawn Stars” and “Collector’s Call.”
His massive stash of collectible items has earned him the nickname “America’s Toy Scout.”
Among the other items that brought in top dollar included a trash can from Magic Kingdom’s Main Street USA, which brought in $10,000; a large Magic Kingdom sign from the theme park entrance, which sold for $7,000; and a Princess Jasmine costume that brought in $9,000.
Part 1 saw the largest bid from either of the auctions, as the three hitchhiking ghosts of Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion went for $387,200 last summer.
