Wayfarer Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes – a historic landmark – is supposed to be gone by the end of Monday.

After being shut down for months due to landslide damage, the chapel is going to be dismantled and put into storage. The executive director told the Daily Breeze that the focus is to shift to preservation. Rebuilding the landmark could cost up to $20 million.

Geologists said the daily land shift on the peninsula is unprecedented – it’s moving up to 12 inches per week in some places. There was already some damage to the chapel from the land moving, but winter rain made everything worse.

The chapel was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was built nearly 75 years ago and has been closed since February.
