The Wilmington intersection where a beloved volunteer was shot and killed will be dedicated in his memory Friday evening.

Jose Quezada was shot and killed July 27 near Bayview Avenue and D Street as he was leaving a Summer Night Lights event at the adjacent Wilmington Recreation Center where he was a cook.

"Mr. Quezada was a husband, father, coach and mentor to many of our Wilmington youth," Councilman Tim McOsker wrote in the motion to designate the intersection at Jose Quezada Memorial Square. "Everyone who knew him, or knew of him, considered Jose to be a wonderful man and pillar of the Wilmington community.

"Jose coached generations of kids at the Rec Center. Many of his youth went on to be coaches and recreation professionals themselves, following in the footsteps of their coach.

"In a tragic irony, Jose was often the person who would organize events to support and honor neighborhood victims of crime and violence, supporting their loved ones and bringing peace to the community. Sadly, this is now the time for the community to honor Jose and support his loved ones."

Members of Quezada's family will join McOsker at the 6 p.m. dedication.
