The episode features Michelle as she digs deep into topics from her most recent book, The Light We Carry. From the harsh realities of being married and raising kids, to her own upbringing and current-day heartbreaks and hopes of the world, the former First Lady leaves it all on the table.

During the hour-long conversation, Obama expresses her sincere hope for all members of society to step out of their comfort zones. The result she believes would be a more accepting, diverse and inclusive world.

“There are so many people who live in their comfort zones forever and they make their world small,” she expressed. “We need to challenge on those fronts because that gets dangerous — when we’re only living in our safe zones…. We’re susceptible to lies and misconstrued notions.”

She continued on to detail the importance of the younger generation getting comfortable with being uncomfortable in order for our nation to propel towards progress.

“I want young people to dissect their fear early so that we don’t get stuck in just what we know,” she shared. “That takes practice, it takes constantly pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. How do I know? Because I’ve been doing it for 60 years now.”

Hear how Michelle personally steps outside her comfort zone and how she prompts others to do the same, as well as much more by tuning in to the newest episode of the We Can Do Hard Things podcast.
