While the chilly masses await our furry friend the Groundhog's advice on whether to expect an early spring or if we should keep our thick socks handy, we're taking a look at some of the shadowy songs Punxutawney Phil – or any of his critter-cohorts across the nation – might enjoy as they emerge from their dens to give us the news.
Strike up the music now on Audacy with playlists curated for fans, by fans like Audacy Polka, and more!
As the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition goes: If a groundhog sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will dive back under the covers for six more weeks of winter; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early. Therefore, we're appropriately referring to this playlist as shadow songs for Groundhog Day.
This year, Groundhog Day falls on Wednesday, February 2 -- so get ready for whatever the Groundhog has in store with a few Groundhog Day songs that we think will soundtrack the day perfectly.
9.Shadows - Lindsey Stirling
We're kicking off this playlist with epic violinist Lindsey Stirling who, in the video for her single "Shadows," looks around anxiously as if she herself was about to emerge from a hole with word of wintry weather. Come to think of it, if this winter doesn't let up, we're going to have the same feelings.
8.Shadow Of The Day - Linkin Park
"Sometimes solutions aren't so simple..." but don't tell that to the hogs. Still, one of the most touching tracks from rockers Linkin Park, taken from the band's 2007 release Minutes To Midnight, would surely be a favorite. We'd like to think Punxutawney Phil is headbanging to some Linkin Park down below the ground.
7.Shadow - Macklemore ft. Iro
You (and the Groundhogs) know this 2019 banger from Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Iro from NBC's SONGLAND. "What I am looking for is something that inspires me, that pushes me creatively, that thing that is just so good that the pen starts moving itself," Macklemore said during the episode, and that's exactly what he got.
6.Even In The Shadows - Enya
Yes, Enya had more than one song, although "Orinoco Flow" is also probably on the Groundhog's playlist. Soooo soothing when played underground! If this song doesn't elicit feelings of warmth and sunshine, well, maybe six more weeks of winter are in order.
5.My Shadow - Gucci Mane
"I run four deep -- me, myself and I and plus my shadow." If there was a walk-on song for the Groundhog, Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane's "My Shadow" is it, hands down. "When I have no one to talk to, I talk to my shadow!"
4.Shadows - Sunny Day Real Estate
Before joining the Foo Fighters, bassist Nate Mendel (and former Foo drummer William Goldsmith) had a little emo band from Seattle called Sunny Day Real Estate. Ask your grandparents, they were the bees knees. Even the Groundhogs like a little sweater-biting breakdown.
3.Shadowplay - Joy Division
"To the center of the city where all roads meet, waiting for you..." Salford lads Joy Division (later New Order), fronted by the late Ian Curtis, likely had no inkling of the odd seasonal celebration of the Groundhog, but they sure did sum up the festivities in the first line of this 1979 classic.
2.Shadow - Brett Eldredge
"I know I got a problem, but you know what they say... Smoke 'em if you got 'em." Country star Brett Eldredge has a dark side and he's not sure he can take no more. Maybe Punxutawney Phil could take a cue from Eldredge and step out into the light!
1.BONUS: Pennsylvania Polka
"Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today!" It's not Groundhog Day if there's no POLKA! Frank Yankovic's "Pennsylvania Polka" was made famous (over, and over, and over again) in the 1993 Bill Murray flick, Groundhog Day. Let's POLKA!
