100 years ago on this day (1919): "The Wichita Wonder," former major league outfielder Joe Wilhoit, with the Western League's Wichita Witches/Jobbers, sees his Organized Baseball-record 69-game hitting streak come to an end when he's held hitless in Wichita by the Tulsa Oilers.

Wilhoit hit .515 during the streak. Later that year in 1919, Wilhoit batted .333 for the Boston Red Sox, playing in the outfield along with 24-year-old Babe Ruth.

The only two serious threats to Wilhoit's record in later years each came from Joe DiMaggio, who fashioned a 61-game hitting streak as a San Francisco Seals rookie in 1933, and a 56-game streak while with the New York Yankees in 1941.
