Tonight (Tuesday 4/14) would have been the home opener and inaugural home game for Wichita's new Triple-A baseball team, the Wichita Wind Surge. Wichita was scheduled to host the Memphis Redbirds in front of a sellout crowd in the first game at the city's newly-built $75 million Riverfront Stadium, followed by post-game fireworks display.
Instead the new stadium, like all sports venues across the U.S., sits empty; all of professional baseball across the nation is currently on hiatus during the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Wichita will have to wait a bit longer for Triple-A baseball, which the city last had with the Wichita Aeros in 1984.
